**Penetrometer**

A penetrometer is a useful tool for accurately measuring soil density (compactness). It can help you reduce expenditure and increase yields. It is simple to use and can be used to accurately determine soil density. Soils are compacted to a certain limit, and plants can only take up water and nutrients. Other consequences are reduced air exchange in the soil and reduced N mineralisation. Root development and plant growth are also poor in compact soils. As a result of compactness, the root system cannot grow and loses its ability to transport water and nutrients. This can reduce yields by up to 50%.

This simple and robust penetrometer measures resistance to penetration into the soil. The device is inserted vertically into the soil, applying equal pressure to both handles. Penetration resistance is displayed on an analogue display in psi (pounds per square inch) on an easy-to-read colour scale display.
