A complex synthetic hybrid produced by crossing blackberries and raspberries. Medium-growing, with long side branches. The canes are moderately prickly. It does not produce rootstocks and the shoot apex is poorly rooted. Relatively more frost resistant than other blackberry varieties, but freezes its canes in colder winters. It matures much earlier than the blackberry. It is prolific. Fruit large, long, conical, hairy, dark burgundy with purplish tinge.

It has a firm consistency and is easy to transport. Harvesting is difficult because the fruit does not detach from the cone. In rainy weather the cone may split and form 'twin berries'.

It has a sour, distinctive flavour. The fruit is excellent for making jam. Suitable for small gardens.
