Description
Summer-sown BMR Indian millet hybrid for grazing and hay production.
This year, this product will be used in a bio-fermented product.
Indian millet is a heat-loving, drought-tolerant crop that thrives on sandy or loamy-sandy soils. Pampa mijo is a BMR hybrid, i.e. brown leafy, with 20-25% less lignin than other Indian millets, which makes it more digestible. It has a thin stalk and a good leaf/stalk ratio. Very tasty, easily digestible feed.
Recommended seed rate: 15-20 kg/ha.
It has no lactic acid content and can therefore be grazed at low levels, when the protein content is much higher than that of Sudan grass. It can reach a protein content of 16-17% of dry matter below 1 m, dropping to about 14% at the onset of bug vomiting.
TECHNOLOGY
Indian millet is sown at a depth of 2-3 cm from May to mid-August. It is not particularly soil-hungry, but may be sensitive to soils with a pH of more than 6.
The soil should be over-warmed, and if sown as a second crop, sowing should be preceded by a quick and shallow ploughing or disking. Sowing should be done with a drill. Careful rolling after sowing is very important.
After sowing, when it reaches a height of 15 to 20 cm, it is advisable to apply 60 to 70 kg of active nitrogen and 30 kg of active nitrogen after each application cycle.
The plant starts to grow rapidly, can be mown 6 weeks after sowing, and can be grazed at 30 cm, which also stimulates bush growth and gives the tender growth a very good yield. Above 60 cm it is better to mow. Flowering can be expected 75 to 80 days after sowing, at which time it will be about 2 m tall.
As it grows, its quality deteriorates, becoming fibrous and not as high in sugar as sorghum, but this deterioration is much less pronounced in BMR hybrids.
If mown to a height of at least 15 cm, it will resprout reliably.
Indian millet is sensitive to frost, so if the first autumn frosts are indicated, it is worth thinking about a quick recovery of the crop.
