Features:
A mature, deciduous tree with a wide canopy. Popularly known as the Christ tree or Christ thorn. The trunk has long thorns. Its compound leaves are composed of small leaflets, turning yellow in autumn. Its flowers are brownish-green, opening in May-June in drooping panicles.
It can grow to 30 m. The fruit is 20-30 cm long, flat and bean-like. Delicious delicacies, the seeds are embedded in a sweet, jelly-like pulp, protected by their thorns.
It is an undemanding tree, well-adapted, but needs plenty of light. It tolerates wind, drought and polluted urban air well.
