The Tiszatelek-Tiszaberceli Nature Reserve was declared a protected area in 1973.
The nature reserve is located in a narrow, long strip of land along the banks of the river Tisza, in the floodplain between the dams of the Tisza.
The Tiszatelek bank is covered with willow and poplar forest. The riparian scrub and the hardwood oak-ash-siliceous-oak grove, which is still sporadic on the higher ground, are present.
Their native shrubs and herbaceous plants, the salt marshes and cattails, the rich seaweed vegetation and the remaining floodplain meadows and marsh meadows are all protected. The floodplain is open to visitors all year round, with the exception of the Hermit Pass and Tódalja. Many protected plant species are native to the area.
