Description
A real speciality in our offer!

Castle to renovate in Borsod county, near the Slovakian border. Ancient woods, well-kept park, 7,3 ha.
A little historical retrospection:
The castle of Putnok, or more precisely the fortified castle of Putnok, which can be proven to have been in existence in 1427, was initially used to protect the estates of the Putnoky family.
In 1834, the then lord of Putnok, Count Alajos Serényi, had a castle built on the site of the castle in keeping with the spirit of the times, by removing its ruins and partly using its building stones.
The last owner of the building, Béla Serényi and his family left the country in 1945, after which the castle was used as a cultural centre, a children's nursery, a Greek refugee camp, a home for war invalids and later a social employment institute.
The castle is a typical example of neoclassical architecture, built of burnt brick, its walls - in some places more than 1 metre thick - reinforced with building stones from the castle on the site. It is a ground-floor building, free-standing on a hillside, surrounded by parkland, covering an area of 7,3 ha.
As it is built into the hillside, facing the valley, its north-eastern side appears to be one storey high, but it is only at ground level. The windows at the bottom are not on the ground floor but in the basement.
The castle has an "L" shaped floor plan, unique in Gömör, Hungary.
Its main façade overlooks the road connecting Putnok with Banreve. It has always had a gable roof, but the original tiles have been replaced by grey slates. 15 years ago, the roof was replaced with a new roof structure and the building was re-roofed with tiles.
The main entrance leads into the great hall, which was originally 6 x 8 metres, but was enlarged by opening up a partition wall to include the adjoining living room.
Next to it is a bedroom, the nanny's room, and next to this is the children's room. From the nursery, towards the rear entrance, is the bedroom shared by the Count and Countess, accessed from the entrance hall. Behind the great hall is a corridor from which the bathrooms open. Next to the great hall, in the north-eastern wing overlooking the valley, there are two large rooms side by side. In the northeast wing are bedrooms and guest rooms, including the room that was used as a dining room. In this wing we find the spiral staircase leading to the cellar and the attic, next to which a wet room has been installed.
The side entrance next to the carriage entrance was used mainly by the staff; the hall behind the door was used to store food and wood for the fire, which was delivered to the kitchen via a longer corridor.
Just below the children's room was a walk-in closet. Next to this, under the count's bedroom, was a guest room. In the cellar there was also a washroom, a laundry room, perhaps a clothes drying room, and plenty of storage space. Here we also find the concrete-lined niche from which tunnels once led.
It is said that one of the tunnels extended all the way to Eger. While the building has only flat-roofed rooms, the cellar is covered with a dome vault. Some rooms even have stucco decorations, the original colouring of which is not known. The rooms were parquet floored, but there were also stone floors. The spiral staircase and its iron railing from the cellar to the attic are original, but the staircase is badly damaged. Above the staircase is a glass roof which was used for lighting. The original wrought-iron grilles covering the ventilation openings are still visible in good condition. These are the remaining elements of the former air heating system. The park of the castle is the largest (of all the Gömör parks in Hungary) and has the most varied tree population. There are also trees over a hundred years old. The park, which was originally fenced, is practically in the best condition of all.
Its uses are manifold:
- an event centre,
- a museum,
- other tourist uses,
- business centre,
- wellness centre,
- retirement home,
- training centre,
- castle hotel.
Closed to visitors, visits by appointment.
The owner is willing to sell industrial, agricultural and residential property.
